Fall is the perfect time to refocus on achieving your goals before the year ends. If you set resolutions back in January but haven’t kept up with them, you’re not alone - and this guide will help you get on track. Below, I have outlined 10 actionable steps to help you make the most of the remaining months of the year, and work towards your goals with purpose.

step 1 - gain clarity

If you set goals at the beginning of the year but didn't write them down, take a moment now to clarify what they were and committed to them on paper. This step is vital for knowing what you’re working towards and bringing your intentions to the forefront of your mind. If you already wrote your goals down, then take some time now to revisit them.

step 2 - start with positivity

Before focusing on what what you haven’t achieved, start by focusing on what you have achieved. Recognise and celebrate the progress you’ve made so far; this will boost your motivation for what’s next. If you already achieved some of your goals, what is stopping from achieving your other ones as well?

step 3 - identify unachieved goals

Now, shift your focus to the goals that you have yet to reach. Recognising which goals are still outstanding allows you to see where to put your attention next. Avoid dwelling on why you haven’t achieved them; instead, simply acknowledge them as opportunities for the coming months.

step 4 - reflect on the barriers

For each unachieved goal, consider any barriers that may have stood in our wy. Did you forget about the goals? Was it impacted by factor beyond your control, or do you maybe hold some limiting beliefs about this goal, that are preventing you to take action?

Also remember - our goals can shift throughout the year. Think about whether your goals still align with your values and the person you are now.

step 5 - assess your goals

With clarity on your achieved and unachieved goals, decide which ones you want to focus on during the reminder of 2024. Professor Richard Rumelt says: “Good strategy works by focusing energy and resources on one, or a very few, pivotal, objectives whose accomplishment will lead to a cascade of favourable outcomes”. Energy and time are limited resources, so narrow your list to goals that truly matter.

step 6 - think about what needs to change

Once you have identified what goals you want to achieve and possible barriers associated with them, consider how to overcome them. For example, if a limiting belief is holding you back, reflect on how this belief formed and start challenging it. Or, if an habit is in the way, think of adjustments you can make. Maybe improving your morning routine will help you achieve your goal of launching a new project or sticking to a workout schedule.

step 7 - outline actionable steps

For each goal, create three concrete steps to help you make progress. Break down large goals into manageable actions. For instance, if your goal is to start a business, consider tasks like developing a brand name, setting up a website and launching your first product. Set deadlines for each step to make the process more tangible and less overwhelming.

step 8 - implement your actions

Success lies in execution. Start implementing your action steps consistenlty, even if it’s just a little each day. For example, you might consider committing to reading 10 pages each morning if your goal this year was to read more books. You might consider recruiting an accountability partner or using an habit tracker app to stay on course.

step 9 - constantly review

Reviewing your goals regularly keeps them at the forefront of your mind. Take a few moments every day to reflect on your progresses, plan of the week ahead and ensure you’re steadily moving closer to achieving your goals.

step 10 - plan for 2025

As a bonus step, start considering your goals for the new year. Reflect on what you’ve achieved and start setting goals for 2025. Jotting down ideas now will help you enter January with purpose and direction.

conclusion

By implementing these steps, you’ll be on the right path to ending this year with a sense of accomplishment and setting a strong foundation for your goals for next year!
